Most Health & Safety laws apply to all business premises - even your home office, where there are no other employees. Any one of several government agencies can turn up, unannounced, to make sure your premises and work methods are safe. You can save huge amounts of time and trouble by showing that you have a good system in place.
More worryingly, poor Health & Safety practice can lead to injuries. Companies can be prosecuted for failing to comply with the regulations - and where there is an injury, they often are.
You have certainly heard the horror stories about personal injury claims, from the man who cleaned the cement mixer by pouring petrol into it and lighting it, because his employer had not shown him how to do it, to coffee which is “too hot”. All these claims have two things in common. They cause your insurance premiums to skyrocket. And less obviously, they are avoidable.
If you have employees or if customers visit you, you also have to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, and make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. But “disabled” doesn’t just mean “wheelchair-bound”. Sight or hearing problems, epilepsy, angina and long term illnesses can all fall within the law’s definition of “disability”. You have to cater for all of them - and it’s difficult to know where to start.
